Case Study

This page informs you to explore the elements on my collage art book that I recently created on my Publication Design I course, one of the projects that lets inspiration come to life in my creative experience.

Project Summary / Goals

Summary:

This project is designed to help the students from publication design know how their collages can reveal shared concerns and understand creative design worldwide.

With Adobe InDesign, Vincent Pacheco asked his students to use previously learned techniques to create an art book with other students’ peers as content for inspiration that evoked different feelings and topics.

Goals:

Following the rules from each phase of the project, I chose to make an interesting art book that can explore different emotions depending on their life of making collages with ideas based on the growth mindset.

By adding graphic elements and using different tools in Adobe InDesign, I recently want to express the significance of emotions worldwide to show my knowledge that can share the wisdom and inspiration for expanding creative determination in the present day.

Research - Book Layout and Typefaces

I found different publication layout examples on Google and Pinterest to better understand my project's context and design elements. I created a mood board to show how interesting it is to show some harmonious color palettes and conservative use of images on each of them. Just for the record, one of the examples comes from a book cover, while others all come from a magazine which I sometimes love to read in case I find great topics related to my career.

Since type is the most critical element of my art book, I created another mood board that shows the twenty typeface examples I found in Adobe Fonts, which is available in Adobe InDesign. For this mood board, I chose my title as an example and labeled all the typefaces using Arial in italics so I could remember each of them quickly. To have inspiration and neatness, I have to choose what font I could use to get the most sense of evoking positive effort before I add them to my work.

After I created two mood boards in Adobe InDesign, I made 18 sketches for the potential layouts in my art book using the sketchbook and pencil (9 for general formats and another 9 for artist feature layouts) to showcase the consistent rhythm or beat which depends on my superior knowledge a past semester ago. Although there are a few changes to this concept, I knew I wanted to capture the epicness of the text and the image themselves, especially if I didn’t want them tilted as a few designers did in the past weeks.

Project Breakdown - Artist Feature

To design an artist feature for my three exciting artists in the publication design class using two spreads that helps establish general aesthetics for my art book, there are a few steps that need to be done.

  • First, I created a strong headline that makes sense to know how the artists’ goals and themes for each of their collages were since I looked at them from my Google Drive page.

  • Next, I added one of the collages with the image credit, which comes from each student’s work list from Google Drive.

  • Using a text tool, I copied and pasted the entire artist’s interview with one instance of a drop cap and a pull quote to show many problem-solving skills. After creating their collages, I briefly explained what possible elements and ideas came to mind. Plus, I added the page numbers in each spread to show what pages I wanted to explore, with the help of inserting markers in InDesign.

  • Finally, I added a gradient background to show my interest in having harmonious colors to describe my upbeat personality all along the creative world.

After I designed the interior pages that look simple to put on innovative and artistic elements in each of them, I created three variations of the front and back cover of the art book to show the formal qualities of my design and highlight the work of the publication design class on the last spring semester. I chose one of the considerations to create a new and original cover with other students’ collages, which takes some time to pay attention to having excitement around shapes and colors in each of them.

Key Elements of Impact

  • Color Palette - The colors I used for this project would give me a lot of passion and energy, which works best for exploring a happy feeling by mixing the primary and secondary colors. Of course, I will be able to see them and my design process in the upcoming weeks so that every color can have a different meaning that looks cool to communicate with my clients.

  • Typography - I used Times New Roman for my art book title and the description for the cover, and the body paragraph for the artist feature session to make it look like it was so inspirational to showcase the good rhythm and flow of the entire book. I also used different typefaces that show the happy feeling to make it look unique and match my layout instantly.

  • Gradients of Perspective - Using gradients would be the best idea to make my art book as beautiful and unique as other students did so that I can put my problem-solving skills into a whole new way to make my intended audience want to know best from the beginning.

  • Layout - The efficient and professional structure of the layout would give me some effort that the text and image would combine into one possible spread as all magazines did, so I decided to put into perspective to use one of my layouts that best suited my personality even more than before.

  • Material - I created my art book all in Adobe InDesign. It is cool to make the elements come to life after watching the tutorials explaining how to use them ideally without wasting time.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I found out that this project is not only one of my favorite assignments to come out of AAD-0052 (Publication Design 1) in the Spring 2022 semester but also one of my most important assignments to fuel up my creativity, even more, to increase my upholder tendency by having primary skills I had learned over the course perfectly.

Over the past few months, I felt overwhelmed during the COVID-19 pandemic, as some students may know about back then. Still, I tried my best to put some determination into inspiration by making the design features very carefully to have a good rhythm and harmony in my entire life. For me, graphic design should be more fun and exciting than publication design.

I look forward to making more projects possible to let graphic design come around me all the time and make my growth mindset continue to grow and inspire my entire life by embracing many challenges and having fun with creativity and excellence in the future.
